With Father’s Day coming up, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate recently asked its Facebook followers what they would put in their man cave. If you have seen the hilarious 2009 comedy, “I Love You, Man,” you’ll remember the scene when Jason Segel brings Paul Rudd back to his home and introduces him to his man cave. This scene in the movie has you wonder what you would put in your own man, or woman, cave. A cave is a part of the home that is supposed to give you a sense of solitude if you’ve been stressed out and need a place to unwind. This room should match your personality and interests, so include it with things that will reflect the person you are. I don’t know about you, but I know what I would put in my man cave.
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how I would build my luxury library. If I didn’t have my own library, I would include an alcove within my man cave that would have bookshelves to serve as the walls. The alcove would include a reclining arm chair where I could relax and become immersed in whatever I’m reading.
I would love to have a pool table and an air hockey table in my man cave; both are two very fun games to have available when you’re entertaining guests. I’ve played pool on occasion and would love to be able to play it whenever I wanted to in my home. I can’t remember the last time I played air hockey, but I would really like to have a table for it so I can get back into the game.
When I have company over, I would definitely want my man cave to have the amenities for a small party, such as speakers mounted on the walls for when I play music. There would be a mini fridge with beverages and a set of cabinets with snacks for my guests, and I would also have a kitchenette, complete with a microwave and sink.
When I’m not working, one of the things that I love to do is sit down and watch a movie or a few episodes of one of my favorite television shows. For my television, I would have the screen be about 50-60 inches, so the TV won’t be obnoxiously big, but big enough. On whichever wall my television is hanging, there would be several shelves built into it on either side of the television that will hold my DVD collection. For watching movies or TV, I would have a couple of large black-leather sofas right in front of the television. I feel that theater-style seating might be a bit much for just a man cave, so I would keep things simple and use comfortable sofas.
Along the walls, I would hang posters and photos from some of my favorite movies, such as “The Graduate,” “Star Wars,” “GoodFellas,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” and “Psycho,” all of which would be placed in stainless steel frames. I really enjoy film, so I would love to add a film-buff aesthetic to my man cave and have the walls adorned with those movie images.
It’s fun to have your own special area in your house to retreat to when you feel the need to relax. When you have a man/woman cave, you’ll be able to get rid of any worries you may have and take part in some of your favorite hobbies. Everyone needs their own space in the house that caters to their interests, and you can use your cave to get some alone time, or, if you feel like having a few people over, you can use it like a party room. There are many things you can do with your own cave, so begin brainstorming ideas and start building!
